Locking Your Bike: Keep It Yours

Few things ruin a ride faster than a stolen bike. Here's how to lower the odds and keep your wheels safe:

How to Keep Your Bike Safe in Memphis

Nothing kills a good ride like realizing your bike’s been stolen. Fortunately, a few smart habits can go a long way in protecting your ride—whether you're rolling through Midtown or locking up Downtown.

1. Choose a Solid U-Lock, Not a Flimsy Cable
In Memphis, a cable lock is basically an invitation. They're easy to cut and often no match for even a basic set of tools. Invest in a sturdy U-lock—preferably one recommended by a local bike shop like these listed here. It’s worth the peace of mind.

2. Don’t Be an Easy Target
Thieves look for the quickest win. A tough lock (or two) and smart locking habits will often convince them to move on. Think of your lock as a visual “not worth the trouble” sign.

3. Prioritize the Frame
Always secure your frame to a fixed object. If possible, loop the U-lock through the rear wheel too. Got a cable or second lock? Use it to catch the front wheel and your seat. And don't forget—lights, pumps, and saddle bags walk off fast in this city. Take them with you.

4. Lock to Something Solid
That flimsy signpost or small tree outside Crosstown might not cut it. Make sure whatever you’re locking to is sturdy, immovable, and not something that can be cut or uprooted.

5. Lock Up Indoors Too
Garages, apartment basements, and back patios in Memphis aren’t always as secure as they seem. Lock your bike inside just like you would on the street.

6. Record and Register
Snap some pics of your bike—especially the serial number (usually found under the bottom bracket). Keep that info handy and consider registering it with Bike Index or local law enforcement. It can make all the difference if your bike goes missing.

What to Do If Your Bike Gets Stolen

It’s every cyclist’s nightmare—but if your bike disappears, don’t panic. Take these steps right away to boost your chances of getting it back:

1. File a Police Report ASAP
Report the theft to the Memphis Police Department immediately. Provide your bike’s serial number, recent photos, and details about where and when it was stolen. You can do this online or at a precinct.

2. Mark It as Stolen on Bike Index
If your bike was registered on BikeIndex.org, log in and mark it as stolen. If you haven’t registered yet, do it anyway—you might still recover it with help from others who check the database.

3. Go Public: Social Media Works
Post a clear photo and description on local groups like “MHBC Lost or Stolen” on Facebook. Include details like the location, time, and any unique features of your bike. The more eyes looking, the better.

4. Look for Cameras
If your bike was taken from a public place or near a business, ask if there’s security footage. Memphis has public and private cameras—reach out to the property owner or the City if needed.

5. Don’t Play Vigilante
If someone contacts you with a lead or you spot your bike, get the police involved. Never try to retrieve it on your own—it’s not worth risking your safety.

6. File an Insurance Claim
Check your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. Many plans cover stolen bikes, even if you didn’t list the bike separately.

7. Watch Resale Sites
Keep an eye on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUpNow, and even pawn shops. Stolen bikes often pop up for sale weeks or months later. You can also use tools like IFTTT.com to set alerts for your bike’s make or model.

8. Notify Local Bike Shops
Let shops around Memphis—like these local shops—know what happened. Bike thieves sometimes try to sell stolen bikes locally, and shop owners are often quick to recognize and report suspicious activity.
