Sarah Blackburn
Director at Large
Member since 2022

With over 25 years of experience in non-profit management, Sarah Blackburn has dedicated her career to fostering community engagement, supporting the arts, and championing health-focused initiatives. Her relationship with the Hightailers began while at Wings Cancer Foundation, where she raised critical funds, developed patient programs, and spearheaded the Ride to Rosemary cycling event. This signature fundraiser, known in the early days for its "5 Guys, 5 Days, 500 Miles" concept, has significantly benefited cancer patients since 2010.

A passionate cyclist since 2005, Sarah's journey began with trail riding and evolved through programs like the Victory Training Team’s Couch to 50 summer series and the Hightailers Bike Safety course. She has completed the Little Rock Big Dam Bridge 50-Miler and the Bluff City Blues Ride three times. As the former Operations Manager at Carpenter Art Garden, Sarah combined her cycling enthusiasm with community service, collaborating with the Hightailers to launch bike safety initiatives for children in Binghampton, including staff training and helmet distribution efforts.

Currently, Sarah is the Program Coordinator for the Employee Engagement Office at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she designs innovative programs to enhance employee well-being. After launching the successful St. Jude Run Club, she is working to establish a campus cycling community, leveraging partnerships with the Hightailers to inspire greater participation and membership.

Greg Blanchard
Director at Large
Member since 2017

Greg ‘GB’ Blanchard has over 30 years of experience leading successful Finance and HR teams in various organizations, from Fortune 100 corporations to smaller, more closely held ventures. His specialty is compensation program analysis, design, and
development. However, his passion is leadership development.

Greg’s affiliation with the Memphis Hightailers began in 2018 on a Monday evening Cameron Brown “Easy” Ride. That ride “was not so easy” as he recalls, being an abject newbie to road cycling at the time. Greg has been a Ride Leader since 2020 and enjoys leading C and D-paced rides for MHBC, Major Taylor Memphis (MTM), and GripAndGrind Cycling. In a very short time, cycling became a passion, and by 2021, Greg was riding five (5) days per week and had completed his first metric century ride. After a medical setback, GB plans a return to regular cycling and hopes to complete his first-century ride in 2025 or 2026.

“I especially enjoy the excitement when new riders experience various cycling milestones: First time clipping in; first 5-, 10- or 20-mile ride; first time completing a ride at an unexpected pace”. “Those experiences satisfy me as a leader, knowing that I helped someone keep going and not quit, just like many excellent cyclists in our community who have helped - and still help - me to keep pushing those pedals!”

Greg holds an Executive Certificate in Financial Planning and an MBA from Christian Brothers University. He has also earned a Post baccalaureate degree in Paralegal Studies from Tulane University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Southern University at New Orleans. His professional certifications include the Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and the Global Remuneration
Professional (GRP) from World at Work.

Greg’s managerial and financial skills and love of supporting others’ goals will greatly benefit the Hightailers Board and its objectives.

Valerie King
Secretary
Member since 2019

Valerie “Val” King is retired from mortgage lending and being a church administrative assistant. In her retirement she teaches piano, fosters kittens for the local humane society and is on their board of directors.

Val’s involvement with the Hightailers began in 2015 when her husband had a widow maker heart attack while leading a Hightailers’ ride. The cyclists rallied around her during this event. She knew she had to support them for supporting her. She does not ride so being a SAG support for as many rides as she was able became her thing. She joined the BCB ride committee as secretary and for several years has been SAG captain for one of the SAGs on the BCB, providing homemade treats to go along with the usual fare.

She and her husband moved back to Ohio in 2020, when her husband retired because their children and grandchildren live there. She continues to support those who supported her by being on the board and running a SAG at the BCB. In her spare time she is learning to tap
dance.

I probably hadn’t touched a bike since I was 12, until I got one of my first “adult” jobs working for Accredo Health Group. They were a primary sponsor of the local MS150, and were looking to form a team to ride. So in 2002 I went to Bikes Plus and picked up a road bike and got to training, including lots of Hightailers rides. But after the MS150 the bike ended up hanging in the garage for years. I finally sold it many years and lots of dust later, then it was announced that Memphis would be getting an Ironman event. The guy I sold my old bike to was now letting it collect dust too, so I was able to buy it back. This time I expected i would just get through the event and be done again. That was November of 2019, and here I am 2 upgrades to road bikes later, plus the addition of a TT bike and a mountain bike. At least 3 days a week I can be found riding a Hightailers event, or group rides with Grind City Cycling, Memphis Thunder or BPC.

My cycling passion started around 1992 when I was attending Christian Brothers University. I started riding the mountain bike trails at Shelby Farms and have been hooked ever since. These days, I ride roads, mountain bike trails, and gravel paths. I am an avid cyclist - usually riding 6 or 7days per week. Needless to say, I am passionate about cycling. Some of my best cycling memories have involved riding bikes on family vacations and business trips, including these biking adventures: San Francisco (Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf), Vancouver (Stanley Park), Chicago (Downtown Lake Trail), Park City, Utah (Olympic Park), Charleston, South Carolina (Ravenel Bridge), and Bentonville, Arkansas (Slaughter Pen Trail)!

I believe that cycling can provide so many benefits (e.g., health, cleaner air with fewer cars, engagement with outdoors, and fellowship with other riders, to name a few). I am hopeful that Memphis will continue to make improvements to bicycling infrastructure as we strive for a bike-friendlier community. I would like to do more to promote cycling in our community and feel that serving on the MHBC board could help.

I work full time at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as Director of Environmental Health and Safety. I also serve as an assistant coach of the Collierville High School Dragons Mountain Biking Team.

Years ago I decided to get off the couch and get some exercise. I went to Walmart and bought the best bike I could find.

I did not want to spend a lot of money in case this was just a phase. That did not work so well.
I tried again. My son had gotten a hybrid bike from the Peddler to take to college. It looked pretty good and I bought one and rode around the neighborhood.

I had heard of this group called the Hightailers. They were having a ride out in Rossville (Wolf River Café ride) and I decided to try it out. Who doesn’t want catfish after a ride. I drove out there - met Mike Lewis (the President at the time) - gave him some money. He opened his trunk, gave me a MHBC hat and I was a member. We all started off - me on my hybrid - everyone else on their road bikes - on an unmarked route with an outdated cue sheet. After about a mile I was alone (nothing has really changed today). I do remember stopping somewhere on Hwy 194, asking a homeowner for some water and sitting under a tree for awhile. Seven (or eight) hours later I came back - I was so tired I did not care about catfish.

I finally got a road bike - joined the MHBC board and the rest is history.
My initial riding experiences set my goals - to help make the ride experience good for all members with things like marked routes and SAGs,

I have handled the ride SAGs for many years and I am now the club treasurer.

My dad has always been my inspiration for cycling. He’s been riding for most of his life and has been a member of MHBC since 2010. Needless to say, I grew up watching him ride. I started attending spin classes in 2020 and absolutely loved it. Then, out of the blue, I decided I wanted to ride in the BCB100. Before I really knew what I was getting myself into, I’d bought a road bike, a pair of bike shorts, cleats, and even scored a free jersey and shoes from the clubhouse. My dad and I started training, and a few months later, I successfully completed my first century ride at the BCB100. By then, I had fallen in love with cycling and have been going strong ever since!

I work full-time as an Occupational Therapist at Regional One Health here in Memphis, and I absolutely love what I do. I feel so fortunate to be able to help people in my community regain their independence and get back to living their lives after illness or injury. I’m passionate about cycling and dedicated to continuing to build a safe and vibrant cycling community here in Memphis.

My husband has always been a cyclist. I wanted to ride with him and ride on the Greenline. I borrowed my daughter’s Walmart bike and off we went. I about died before I could get back to the car! He then took me to get my own bike and picked out a road bike for me. I didn’t want those skinny tires and would not even consider it. I saw the hot pink townie when I walked in Bikes Plus and I was sold!  It didn’t take me long to get hooked on biking and realizing I needed more gears to keep up with him. I bought my next bike, a hybrid from All About Bikes. We began riding groups rides and really getting addicted to riding with a group. I had always wanted to do a half marathon but because of arthritis could not. I heard about the Bluff City Training Team and decided that’s what I wanted to do! Of course I had to get a road bike, just like my husband wanted to get me a few years earlier, to train. I got a purple Jamis from All About Bikes. Being on the training team was one of the hardest things I have ever done but made so many friends and completed the 100 mile course! What a sense of accomplishment! Since then we have enjoyed riding with the training team and participating in many of the group rides that the Hightailers have.
