If you can do the distance and average 15mph, I would call that a little better than a beginner. I am sure that all levels will be welcome on a 40 mile ride. This sounds more like a social fun ride than a hammerfest.
We don't stop playing when we get old...we get old when we stop playing.

I'm new to the group and fairly new to cycling - avg about 15 right now. I know I can handle the distance, but are all levels of riders welcome to participate in this?
