Collierville Kicks Off "Collierville in Motion" to Tackle "Death Valley" Safety Concerns

COLLIERVILLE, TN – Marking the start of National Bike Month, the Town of Collierville has officially launched "Collierville in Motion," a comprehensive traffic safety initiative aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence between motorists and cyclists.

The announcement comes as a major relief to the local cycling community, which has spent nine months advocating for improvements to the treacherous stretch of road known as "Death Valley" or "No Man’s Land." As the only viable connection for cyclists between Collierville and Germantown, the corridor has long been a source of anxiety for athletes who simply want to exercise without obstructing traffic.

Advocacy and Partnership

The progress on this initiative is largely attributed to the collaborative efforts between town officials and local cycling leaders. A special thanks is extended to Kevin McGill, a dedicated Memphis Hightailer Member and Ride Leader, for his tireless work alongside the Town of Collierville to make this project a reality. His leadership and partnership were instrumental in transforming these safety concerns into actionable change.

"Cyclists don't want to be in motorists' way or delay them at all; we just want to get exercise," noted a community member regarding the collaborative effort. "Coexistence is key to everyone's well-being, and we are grateful to the Town of Collierville for the partnership to make this a safer place for all athletes."

Campaign Highlights

Launched on May 1, 2026, the initiative unites the Town’s Public Information Office, Engineering, Public Works, Police, and Fire departments. Throughout the month of May, residents can expect:

  • Educational PSAs: Resources designed to clarify the legal rights and responsibilities of both drivers and cyclists.
  • Safety Infrastructure: A multi-departmental focus on ensuring commuters, students, and athletes can navigate high-traffic areas like Wolf River Boulevard safely.
  • New Traffic Safety Hub: At the end of May, the Town will debut a centralized digital hub on colliervilletn.gov featuring state laws and safety tools.

"Whether you are a student walking to school... or a cyclist getting daily exercise, we are committed to making education the foundation of our safety culture," said Jennifer Preston, the Town's Public Information Officer.

By addressing the specific needs of the "Death Valley" corridor through this unified effort, Collierville is taking a definitive step toward ensuring that "No Man’s Land" becomes a safe passage for every resident in motion.
